A mid-1800’s architectural wonder helped make Chicago the city it is today. The 96-mile Illinois & Michigan Canal (I&M Canal) connected the Great Lakes in Bridgeport, Chicago to the Illinois River at LaSalle-Peru, and amazingly unique towns sprung up that maintain their authentic charm to this date.

READ ON!It’s important to find beauty in the simple things in life. Going on a nice peaceful hike and bird watching is one of the many things you can do at Lake Renwick Preserve.
Last weekend I went out to Lake Renwick Preserve-Turtle Lake Access and had the most peaceful and relaxing experience. The 1.5 mile hike from the parking lot to the bird viewing trail was paved with cement and crushed limestone, which makes it a biking/running friendly path. (If this path seems a bit long there is another view of Lake Renwick available at Copley Nature Park )
The views of the Heron Rookery preserve were great. They have lots of information about birds you may see and you might even be able to sneak in some education without your little ones realizing! The preserve is home to some interesting birds like cattle egrets, great egrets, black-crowned night herons, great blue herons, double-crested cormorants and many more.
If you want a closer look at the birds or their habitat you can use their complimentary viewing scope. Also, to keep young ones interested in what is going on, they have a cut out of a real size great blue heron and a measuring stick to see how little ones measure up to the bird!
This is a great way to get out with your family or friends to get some fresh air and maybe even learn something about the Plainfield Wildlife.
