A name given by the original Potawatomi inhabitants meaning “meeting of the waters,” Channahon is indeed where the powerful forces of three rivers meet to form the heart of the Illinois & Michigan National Heritage Corridor. The Des Plaines, Kankakee, and DuPage rivers converge to form the Illinois River and the start of the Illinois and Michigan Canal Locks & Dam system. Channahon State Park serves as the head of the Illinois Michigan Canal State Trail, offering picturesque scenery and endless biking, hiking, fishing and recreation possibilities. Nearby Des Plaines Fish & Wildlife Area is a popular destination for hunting, trapshooting, fishing and camping. It also has a nature preserve with game farm and waterfowl refuge. For those who prefer more manicured greens, Channahon is home to one of the top public golf courses in Illinois, Heritage Bluffs Golf Course, and named one of the Best Places to Play by Golf Digest Magazine 2006-2007. Located on Front Street along the Des Plaines River you’ll find some of Channahon’s oldest and most fascinating residents. The Briscoe Burial Mounds are the largest Native American burial grounds in northern Illinois and an opportunity to learn about Native American heritage in the region. The Village of Channahon invites you to discover more of the people, places, and history of where three rivers met and the Illinois & Michigan National Heritage Corridor was born.
