A mid-1800’s architectural wonder helped make Chicago the city it is today.  The 96-mile Illinois & Michigan Canal (I&M Canal) connected the Great Lakes in Bridgeport, Chicago to the Illinois River at LaSalle-Peru, and amazingly unique towns sprung up that maintain their authentic charm to this date.

Picturesque and serene, Seneca is a river community which strives to connect with residents and visitors. The Illinois & Michigan Canal passes right through downtown offering recreational opportunities for hiking, biking, and nature lovers. Constructed in 1861-62 right on the banks of the canal is Hogan’s North Elevator, the oldest remaining grain elevator. The site is open to the public and for tours by appointment. Nearby Crotty Park houses the LST Memorial. This memorial pays tribute to the men and women who built and sailed Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. The shipyards and hands which built these behemoth vessels were located right in Seneca. Not to be overlooked, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church’s Italian gothic architecture is said to rival the cathedrals of Italy. The Carrara marble, granite columns and trefoil arches are sure to inspire.
