North Utica, referred to by locals as simply Utica, is the premier destination in Illinois for outdoor recreation due to the captivating beauty of several state parks which draw visitors from all over the country. Matthiessen State Park is known for magnificent rock formations, canyons, wildlife and mineral springs. Buffalo Rock State Park has a fascinating Native American history and is the site of “Effigy Tumuli”, earth art sculptures created by artist Michael Heizer, depicting five creatures native to the Illinois River: snake, turtle, catfish, frog, and water strider. The best known of these natural beauties is Starved Rock State Park. Visitors come from all over to hike the 18 canyons formed by glacial erosion, see the dramatic sandstone bluffs and carved rock formations, and marvel at the spectacular Springtime waterfalls. A trip to the Visitor Center will give you all the information you need for hiking, sightseeing, guided tours and special events in the park. Starved Rock hosts events for every interest including Cross Country Ski, Wildflower Pilgrimage, Montreal Canoe, and Fall Color weekends. Take your time and enjoy everything the parks have to offer – stay the weekend at Starved Rock Lodge or Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort. Back in town, you’ll find an alluring downtown area with antique, gift and specialty shops featuring beautifully crafted items by local artists. August Hill Winery has a tasting room where you can purchase their wines to take home or enjoy on their relaxing outdoor patio. Illinois River Winery, best known their huge selection of 40+ wines and renowned fruit wines, offers free samples and a spirited welcome in their tasting room on the edge of town. In October, Utica cooks up some mean Burgoo during the annual Burgoo Festival. Get a taste of this hearty pioneer stew, cooked outdoors on a wood fire and enjoy the craft show, flea market, music and family entertainment.
