Mendota is a true main street community with a few surprises up its sleeve. Every August for the past 65 years, this small town has welcomed more than 60,000 visitors to the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival. Four days and 50 tons of sweet corn later, all have enjoyed countless live bands and family entertainment, parade, carnival, ethnic and regional foods, and a beer garden – plus free admission and parking too! Visit www.sweetcornfestival.com for this year’s dates. You may be surprised to find out that Mendota has three fascinating museums. The Union Depot Railroad Museum houses an operational 1940's AMTRAK train station and railroad memorabilia. The Hume-Carnegie Museum covers the history of the Mendota area including exhibits on Wild Bill Hickok, Helen Hokinson cartoons, and a rare Western Cottage Organ. The Breaking of the Prairie Museum is dedicated to the development of the prairie farming and is housed in a replica barn with glass walls, allowing visitors to view rotating displays.
