Where is the Heritage Corridor?
The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) encompasses the communities and counties along the historic 97-mile Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor. The Heritage Corridor spans from the Chicago Portage Area just southwest of Chicago to LaSalle-Peru including the counties of Will, Grundy, LaSalle and Putnam. The region conveniently located along I-55 from Chicago to Joliet along I-80 west to LaSalle-Peru.

Explore The Old Joliet Prison

Old Joliet Prison is currently open for 2020 tours. They have six different tours you can book  to enjoy all the rich history and stories that lie behind their walls. 

Here’s a list of tours to choose from: 

  • Self-Guided Prison Tour: $20 per person 

Over the course of 1.5 hours, you will be able to freely walk the site on a designated path. While you will not have access to buildings, we have signs along the way for you to learn more about how life would have been. 

  • Haunted Tour: $30 

1.5-hour walking tour of the Old Joliet Prison lead by docents and trained tour guides from the Joliet Area Historical Museum. This tour talks about the general history of the prison from when it was first opened in 1858 to present day. These historic tours are a great introduction to the site and its history. This tour does take you into a select few buildings.

  • Haunted History Tour: $40 

1.5-hour walking tour of the Old Joliet Prison covering the darker side of the Historical Prison. This historical tour will cover some of the grimmer stories as you walk through the prison at dusk. This tour does take you into a select few buildings.

Strongly recommended for ages 16+

  • Guard Tour: $40

1.5-hour walking tour of the Old Joliet Prison led by two docents who worked at the prison while it was still in operation until its closing in 2002. You will hear about the daily life at the prison during their time there - a more personal take on the site's history. Due to the mature nature, this tour is strongly recommended for 16+ and all minors must be accompanied by a guardian. This tour takes you into a select few buildings.

Recommended for ages 16+

  • Photography Tour: $50

4 hours on the expansive Historic Prison site taking photos in the morning light with supervised access to the prison yard and limited, predesignated buildings. The natural beauty of the limestone and architecture will inspire you. 

  • Paranormal Investigation Tour $75

4-hour paranormal investigation of the Old Joliet Prison site led by a special guest investigator with 20 years’ experience and a historical guide from the museum. The two will lead you through the site into several buildings where the group can investigate (together or on their own) before being led to the next location. 

Guests will be allowed to bring their own equipment to use in the buildings as they see fit. The two guides will be available to answer questions or suggestions. Groups will be limited to 15 people.
